What should I say when I call a ruthless collection agency?

Some of my old medical bills are in collections. I just checked my credit report. There is a new collection agency showing up, and it says that I owe 0. I don’t know what it’s for.

I looked the company up online, and I read reviews. It sounds like the people who work for this company are ruthless. They call people all day, they yell at people, and they even resort to name calling.

I want to find out why I owe 0, but I can’t afford to make a large payment. I’ve been using a debt consolidation company to pay off my debt. Each company gets a small payment every month.

What if I call the collection agency and they demand payment? Should I tell them that they will get a payment later? Should I hang up? I’m worried that if I say the wrong thing, they might use it against me.

My credit is good right now. I have paid all my bills at or above the minimum on time for over 7 years, and any blips on my credit have just recently "dropped off" my credit report.

However, I am struggling, and things are about to get worse for me, and very soon I will start to be in the negative.

I need help that won’t ruin my credit score I have worked so hard to repair.

If you have used a Debt Management Program and did not have to pay any additional fees, nor make any payments until all of your creditors accepted you into the program, please pass the name along to me.
