Debt consolidation? Debt relief Grants?? Govt assistance?
My friend is in the middle, she makes too much apparently for food stamps or similar programs, although I can’t help her figure out what those numbers are. The people at the office were less than helpful so I told her I’d try here.
We looked into Debt Consolid and then Debt GRANTS and we have a good idea what the differences are, but where can I go for TRUSTWORTHY information from the government?
When I do a search, you know, everyone is looking for a sucker to give them their money. She doesn’t have it.
Any online sites that are like .gov for info?
Any suggestions for ‘middle class’ getting financial help? She doesn’t want to lose her car or her house, it’s about all she has left. She is trying to find something smaller but she has kids.
Okay, I hope you get to read this! Thanks!
Between hubby and kids she has 5 people in the home. I think they make about 40k a year but I can’t be sure on that part. She’s in VA too. No kids are under five years old etc.
Dispute a debt before court?
About three months ago I was contacted by creditor, Global Acceptance, for a secondary student loan (not a government loan such as Sallie Mae) and they attempted to collect on a debt that I didn’t have a lot of recollection about. The she offer me a settlement of ,000 of a ,000 (and some change) loan. If I HAD ,000 I wouldn’t be up 5:15 am asking this question. She told me that I was making payments before but stop. I don’t EVER recall making a payment to this company unless it was through Care One the debt consolidation program I was working with but could no longer afford because I wasn’t bringing in any money (still not bringing in any money). She asked if I could send her any form of payment…I told her I will rearrange my budget and see what I can do. She told me she will send me out the payment form letter before it went into the hands of Attorney…Well the next letter that I received was not a repayment letter but a warrant to appear in court to collect a debt.
My question is can I have this disputed before I head to court next month? I do not remember this loan at all…The only loan that I should have from the school that I attended should be my Sallie Mae loan (which is deferred at the time because I have continued my schooling). Can I send the attorney’s office a dispute letter? Global Acceptance a collection company…It doesn’t even say who the original Loan is from!
I’m not trying to cheat the systems. If I had the money to pay the debt I would but I don’t. I do admit going to the school but remember signing for a Sallie Mae loan plus another loan.
What should I do? Any positive feed down will be greatly rewarded!

Question about consolidation of defaulted student loans…?
I took out a student loan 5 years ago to go to college. Defaulted on loan (financially unable to repay).
Collector for Texas Guaranteed Student Loans Blah Blah called me yesterday, and guided me through the steps for the online application for consolidating the defaulted loan here:
www.loanconsolidation.ed.gov
He said it is a government program set up to give people who have defaulted on student loans a second chance.
Gentleman told me that if my applications is approved (and it probably will be), when it is processed, the record will show that I no longer owe money on a student loan.
Question is: once the record reflects my new situation (loan consolidated, debt no longer shows up, etc.), can I apply for and get another student loan?

I need the names of some trustworthy companies that offer Debt Management Plans?
I will not qualify for government grants. I cannot get another consolidation loan.
I do not want to use a debt negotiation service.
My credit is good right now. I have paid all my bills at or above the minimum on time for over 7 years, and any blips on my credit have just recently "dropped off" my credit report.
However, I am struggling, and things are about to get worse for me, and very soon I will start to be in the negative.
I need help that won’t ruin my credit score I have worked so hard to repair.
If you have used a Debt Management Program and did not have to pay any additional fees, nor make any payments until all of your creditors accepted you into the program, please pass the name along to me.
